Russian experts to inspect oil well that exploded in northeastern India

Russian experts to inspect an oil well that exploded in remote northeastern India, spewing crude oil and gas into the air, Indian oil company authorities said Thursday.

The explosion occurred Tuesday, and "what we faced was a blow-out situation, but our engineers have almost managed to plug the leak by late Wednesday after a 30-hour battle," said J.K. Talukdar, who heads the eastern operations of government-owned Oil India Ltd.

"There is still some leakage that we hope to plug completely later today," Talukdar told The Associated Press from Duliajan, 550 kilometers (340 miles) east of Gauhati, Assam's capital.

A team of Russian experts was scheduled to reach the site of the leak in Dikom village near Duliajan later Thursday to inspect whether it was plugged effectively, he said, reports the AP.
