On February 20, US State Secretary Colin Powell will speak at the conference devoted to the history of the cold war and to US-Russian relations.
As a report of the press service of the US State Department notes, the conference will be held at Prinston University (New Jersey state), and will be timed to the 100th birthday anniversary of prominent American diplomat and political scientist George Kennan, former US Ambassador to the USSR, which is being marked in the USA.
In the USA Kennan is considered to be one of the most prominent specialists on Russia and is famous for his contribution to the beginning of the cold war. In 1946 he, being an attache of the US Embassy to Moscow, authored the well-known telegram addressed to US president Harry Truman in which the strategy of US "nuclear deterrence" with regard to the USSR was formulated for the first time.
In 1952 Kennan became US Ambassador to the USSR but was recalled on the Kremlin's demand for his criticism of the Soviet authorities.
Kennan is the author of a quite a number of books, among them Soviet-US Relations: 1917-1920, Russia and the West under Lenin and Stalin, and Nuclear Madness.
Chairman of the National Intelligence Council Robert Hutchings, former US Ambassador to Russia Jack Matlock, and well-known American political scientists and journalists will also take the floor at the conference.
