Just 15% of Latvian schools only teach in Russian

Out of 1045 Latvian schools just 159 (15.21%) only teach in Russian while 138 teach in both Russian and Latvian. As a Rosbalt correspondent reports, this was announced today by Latvian Ambassador to Russia Normann Penke.

On February 5 the Latvian Sejm (parliament) decided to amend the law 'on education' and the document was signed by President Vaira Viнe-Freiberga on February 13. This law stipulates that from September 1, 2004, Latvian secondary schools will only be allowed to teach 40% of subjects in Russian, that is just 5 out of 12.
