Crew of American plane crashed in 1944 in Kamchatka buried in Washington

The remains of the crew of a US Air Force plane that crashed during World War II in Russia's Kamchatka peninsula (Far East) were buried on Friday at Washington's Arlington Memorial Cemetery, the Pentagon press service reports.

A bomber with seven crewmen on board, stationed at one of the islands near Alaska, was fulfilling a combat mission in bad weather on March 24, 1944.

After the plane disappeared, its wrecked parts and the crew's remains were not found, but in 2000 the Russian-American commission on prisoners of war and missing persons received a message that Kamchatka residents had seen the aircraft's debris. A search expedition discovered these debris, as well as human remains whose genetical analysis confirmed they belonged to the seven pilots who got lost in 1944.

Their families gave the permission, and the remains were buried in a common grave at the Arlington memorial cemetery.
