Russian Foreign Ministry welcomes UN resolution on Mideast

The Russian Foreign Ministry welcomes a UN resolution on the Middle East, a statement by information and press department of the Russian Foreign Ministry says.

"The fact that the UN adopted a resolution shows that the international community is seriously concerned with growing tension in the region and proves once again the necessity to join efforts with the UN leading role to contribute to settlement of the situation and resumption of a peace process in the Middle East," the statement reads.

Condemnation of any terrorist attacks, display of violence and any destruction in the region is an important element of the resolution, the Russian Foreign Ministry believes.

"Russia will keep on coordinating the partners in the Four in particular in the UN and UN Security Council framework to achieve the main goal," the statement says.

The day before a tenth emergency special session of the UN General Assembly considered the escalated situation in the Middle East by request from Arab countries and the Non-Alignment Movement, the Russian Foreign Ministry recalled.

After the discussion the UN General Assembly adopted the resolution by the majority of votes (the Russian Federation voted for it either). The resolution demands that Israel stops construction of so called "security fence" on the occupied Palestinian territory as it does not comply with 1949 truce line and contradicts norms of the international law.

The UN General assembly supported the activities by the Four of international mediators and called upon both Palestinian and Israeli parties to live up to their commitments in accordance with the Road map.
