Russian delegation to attend 32nd session of UNESCO General Conference

The 32nd session of the UNESCO General Conference opens in Paris on Monday, September 29.

The central event of this session will be the return to this organisation of the United States. In 1985 that country decided to withdraw from the organisation for financial considerations. On October 1, 2003, the USA will become the 190th member of UNESCO.

The Russian delegation at the conference will be headed by Deputy Prime Minister Galina Karelova. She is to deliver a report on the protection of the world cultural heritage - the main theme at this conference.

It is planned to consider the draft international convention on saving the objects of the world cultural heritage and to discuss the draft UNESCO declaration concerning the intentional destruction of the cultural heritage.

The conference participants will also consider the draft international declaration on genetic data of man as well as the problem of using foreign languages and the questions of protecting intellectual property on the Internet.
