Russian foreign minister Igor Ivanov believes that it is still difficult to speak of a possible time of adoption of a new resolution of the UN Security Council on Iraq, he told Russian journalists.
According to Ivanov, "general consultations, a general discussion" are now being held in the UN Security Council. "For this reason, no concrete new text of a draft resolution exists now," he said.
"It is quite obvious, however, that there is a common urge to stop the dangerous escalation of tension in Iraq and to begin a process of political settlement with a view to restoring Iraq's sovereignty as soon as possible and forming legally elected bodies of power," the Minister stressed.
As Ivanov said, this can be achieved only through joint efforts of the international community under the UN aegis. "Russian diplomacy will be working in this direction during the next few days," the Russian Federation's Foreign Minister said.
