Russia appeals to Greece for extradition of media tycoon Gusinsky

The office of the Russian Attorney General contacted the Greek government yesterday, demanding the extradition of Russian businessman Vladimir Gusinsky. This was confirmed by a spokesman for the Greek Justice Ministry. According to Reuters news agency, Mr Gusinsky's fate now depends on the Greek court of appeal, which will be responsible for considering Russia's demand.

If Greece refuses to extradite Mr Gusinsky, he will be released and allowed to leave Greece. The US and Israel have already urged Greece not to extradite the media magnate.

Mr Gusinsky was arrested at the end of August when his plane arrived in Greece. In Russia he has been accused of illegally appropriating USD 250 million.
