Moldova hosting summit of BSEC parliament speakers

Russian troops have been performing peacekeepers' functions in the Dniester Region, a self-proclaimed republic on Moldova's territory, said Sergei Mironov, Speaker of the Russian Federation Council, or the upper parliamentary house. Russian peacekeepers can stay on in Transdniestria if the Moldovan authorities make a relative request, he added.

On Tuesday, Mr Mironov took part in the summit of parliament speakers of the member-countries of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation organisation (BSEC). The further stabilisation effort in the region, contribution to settlement of ethnic and religious conflicts and prevention of new regional conflicts are the major areas of the BSEC Parliamentary Assembly's activities.

The summit signed a declaration on the occasion of the BSEC's 10th establishment anniversary. The declaration urges further economic integration between the regional countries, more intensive cooperation with other parliamentary assemblies, particularly the European Parliament.
