Cardinal Sodano supports Kazakhstani initiative on hosting a congress of world religions

Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Angelo Sodano supported the initiative of Kazakhstan on hosting a congress of world religions. The cardinal expressed his opinion at a Saturday meeting with President Nursultan Nazarbayev in Astana.

The Kazakh president said, in turn, that Astana highly values the friendly contacts with Vatican and wholeheartedly supports its initiatives concerned with human rights and democratic freedoms.

The Vatican secretary of state came to the Kazakh capital on Friday evening. On May 17 he will visit the monument to the victims of political persecution campaigns in Astana and attend Holy Mass at the local Catholic Cathedral.

On May 18 the cardinal will fly to Karaganda in Central Kazakhstan, where he will attend Holy Mass in the local cathedral and take part in the ground-breaking ceremony for a new cathedral in downtown Karaganda. His Eminence Angelo Sodano will also visit the Discalced Carmelite Nunnery, the Orthodox Church of the Presentation, the local mosque and the Greek Catholic Church.
