Parliament of Azerbaijan to Send 150 Servicemen to Iraq

The Milli Mejlis, Azerbaijani parliament, on its Wednesday session decided to send the country's 150 servicemen to Iraq to take part in an operation of the international coalition.

The decision was passed by 92 votes, with two parliamentarians voting against it. One of the two was leader of Azerbaijan's Communist Party, deputy Ramiz Akhmedov, who believes that Iraq was occupied by the USA and thus Azerbaijani soldiers should not participate in operations there.

Azerbaijan will send to Iraq 14 officers, 16 sergeants and 120 soldiers. They have already undergone a two-week special training, the Azerbaijani Defence Ministry's representative Ramiz Najafov reported during the debate in the parliament. The country's servicemen will join the US troops in Iraq and will be stationed in the cities in Mosul, Kirkuk and Karbala.

At present, Azerbaijan is negotiating with the American side the financial aspect of the participation in Iraqi operations, Najafov pointed out.
