Russia, Central Asia leaders discuss economic and political cooperation

President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev has told journalists that the major topics for discussion at the informal meeting in Aktau of the leaders of Central Asia and Russia are economic and political cooperation, as well as regional security. He stressed that the situation in the region is still causing concern due to the developments in the Middle East, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

While talking about cooperation between the five states, Nazarbayev pointed out that at the meeting they are discussing, among other things, the development of cooperation in the fuel and energy sector, dwelling not solely on oil and gas production, and transportation of these resources, but on electric power production as well. Apart from that, the Presidents discussed the issue of joint entry into global energy resources markets.

Having indicated that immediately after the meeting the Presidents will go to the Aktau sea port, Nazarbayev stressed that the port was of interest to all the participants in the meeting as "a means of getting access to the Caucasus and Iran." President Nazarbayev urged that Kazakhstan be included in the North-South transport corridor as soon as possible.

In general, according to the Kazakh President, the meeting was held in the spirit of "good neighbourly relations and complete understanding." He reaffirmed that the meeting would bring forth no documents whatsoever.
