Argentina studies possibilities of sending icebreaker for saving Magdalena Oldendorf trapped in ice field

The Argentinian Navy is "studying possibilities of sending the icebreaker Almirante Irisar to Antarctica to help the vessel with the scientific expedition on board" that is trapped in ice.

The information was circulated June 17th by the local press agency Telam with reference to its sources in the Navy, but without any further details.

Meanwhile, neither the Russian naval attache in Argentina nor the Russian transport ministry's representative in Buenos Aires received a inquiry or an order from the communications centre on using the region's only icebreaker for helping the German vessel "Magdalena Oldendorf". On board the ship, there is a Russian scientific expedition returning from Antarctica.

The insurance firm of the trapped vessel is believed to be negotiating with the Argentinian Navy.
