Georgian Parliament Fails To Elect Its Speaker

The Parliament of Georgia held its parliamentary session November 7; however, that session ended just 15 minutes later for lack of quorum. Only about 10 members of the national Parliament were present. Meanwhile most other MP-s are involved in active consultations concerning the election of the Parliament's Speaker. As a rule, such consultations are taking place behind closed doors. At the same time, the second largest parliamentary faction of the Citizens' League party keeps unanimously suggesting that Nino Burdzhanadze be elected to the post of speaker. This was disclosed to reporters November 7 by former parliament speaker Zurab Zhvania. He emphasized the need for unhesitatingly electing the Parliament's speaker because of the present-day national situation.
