Russian Foreign Minister To Participate In UN Security Council Meeting On Struggle Against Terrorism

During the 56th session of the UN General Assembly Russian Minister Foreign Affairs Igor Ivanov will take part in a whole number of multilateral activities. Ivanov will, in particular, participate in a special meeting of the UN Security Council on struggle against terrorism, in a conference of the 6+2 Group on Afghanistan at the ministerial level, and in a meeting with the MERCOSUR member states. Besides, the Russian Minister is expected to hold numerous bilateral meetings and conversations with the heads of the foreign-policy agencies of other countries. The traditional meeting of the ministers of the states - permanent members of the Security Council with UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan to exchange views on the most important problems facing the United Nations figures prominently in Igor Ivanov's agenda. In Russia's opinion, within the UN framework it is necessary to take urgent measures to build a global system of countering the new threats and challenges, international terrorism being the principal among them. The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs holds the view that the world organisation has necessary prestige and universality for organising a collective and comprehensive rebuff to terrorism on the firm foundation of international law.
