Georgian President Opposes Abolishing Institution Of Presidency

Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze in his interview to the National Radio spoke of his opposition to doing away with the institution of presidency and establishing a parliamentary republic in Georgia. Mr. Shevardnadze said that Georgia should avoid extremes when it introduces changes to its constitution, as extreme decisions might lead to unrest in the country. Mr. Shevardnadze believes that changes in the basis of Georgia's constitutional regime are "inadmissible." "Today Georgia is a presidential country and the need for the institution of presidency has been proven by the recent events, when the entire government was sacked, the chairman of the parliament resigned, and a rally of thousands of people was underway in Tbilisi," said the president.
