German marines will be redeployed near Afghanistan in early January 2002, Rudolf Scharping, the German Defence Minister, was quoted as saying on Thursday in an interview with the Bild newspaper published in Hamburg. Scharping called "the region of the Arabian Peninsula" a probable site for the future deployment. Speaking about the objectives of the German Bundeswehr in the US anti-terrorist operation, the German Defence Minister mentioned aerial transportation and evacuation of the wounded, as well as chemical and biological surveillance by means of specially equipped Fuchs armoured personnel carriers (APC), adding that "these vehicles could also be deployed in the region."
