Ex-governor Of Kandahar Refused To Recognise Agreement With Taliban Leader On Surrendering The City

Former governor of Kandahar province Haji Gul Agha refused to recognize the agreement with Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar on surrendering the city. Gul Agha declared that he ignored this agreement, and his detachments would continue offensive on Kandahar. At the present time the units of the former governor occupy the Kandahar aerodrome, 15 km to the south-east of the city. The Qatar TV station Al-Jazeera broadcast the statement of ex-governor's representative Abdul Ghadi who said: "We reject the agreement which allows the Mullah Najibullah (the former member of the Taliban movement leadership) to seize power. He made a lot of mistakes in the past with regard to the city's inhabitants. Gul Agha should be the governor who is a worthy man." According to the agreement concluded by spiritual leader of the Taliban movement Mullah Mohammad Omar with Mullah Najibullah on Thursday, the Taliban give up arms and the city in exchange for general amnesty, and Najibullah becomes Kandahar's governor.
