United Nations Working Out Measures in Case of a Humanitarian Disaster in Iraq After the Military Operation

The United Nations bodies have formed an informal consultative system to jointly work out measures in case of a humanitarian disaster in Iraq as a consequence of the possible military operation against that country. Director of the United Nations Information Center in Moscow Alexander Gorelik spoke about it on Tuesday at the news conference in RIA Novosti.

"Goods, foodstuffs and everything else what is necessary are being accumulated in case of a humanitarian crisis in Iraq," he said.

According to the United Nations, only for the first phase of the preparations for such a development of the situation it is necessary to ask the donor-countries to give 37 million dollars. "This sum is rather modest, taking into consideration that events may develop unpredictably," said Alexander Gorelik.

"The United Nations does not exclude the possibility of the appearance of an acute humanitarian situation in case of military actions in Iraq," he underscored. Though, according to him, "painstaking, unofficial" work for preventing such developments is being done, the United Nations hopes that it will not be used.
