Moscow Believes Russian Weapons Deliveries to India Will Not Violate Regional Balance of Forces

The deliveries of Russian weapons to India will not violate the balance of forces in the region, believes Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov. He said this to journalists on Friday, when his talks with Indian Defence Minister George Fernandes ended in Moscow.

The Russian minister pointed out that the balance of forces in the region would not be violated if Russian weapons were delivered to India.

He called India "the largest democracy as far as the size of the population is concerned" and stressed that a long and great friendship, mutual understanding, support and assistance were typical of Russian-Indian relations. India is "our strategic partner and these are not idle words," Sergei Ivanov said.

He stated that the countries are now cooperating in practically all services of the army and navy as well as aviation and land force. The Russian defence minister expressed confidence that this cooperation would further develop. According to him, the prospects of such cooperation should be connected, above all, with the introduction of new technologies and joint service centres and enterprises, in the first place in high-tech spheres where the results could be of value not only for military but also civilian areas.
