Afghan refugees expelled from Tajikhstan

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has confirmed that five Afghans were expelled from Tajikistan last week, despite the fast that Dushanbe had declared in September that no asylum seekers would be deported from the country.

On 9th November, 30 Afghans were rounded up on the streets of the Tajikh capital, Dushanbe, and were detained for interrogation. Two minors and two undergoing medical treatment were released. The UNHCR has protested to the authorities and has claimed that the Afghans who were sent back may be in danger due to the fact that they were linked with “previous regimes”.

Last year, Tajikistan repatriated 9,200 Afghan refugees.
