Warm weather leads to malaria spreading in Kyrgyzstan

About 2,000 people are currently infected with malaria in Kyrgyzstan. The health ministry has reported that the situation in the south of the country is particularly alarming. Approximately 1,200 cases have been recorded since the start of July in the Oshsk region alone. The number of infected has grown considerably in the last few days.

Doctors say that the unusually warm weather the republic is currently enjoying is to blame. This allows malaria-carrying mosquitoes to multiply, while seasonal migration from neighbouring republics where diagnosis of the disease remains at a low level also plays a role.

Kyrgyzstan's health ministry is intending to appeal to Russia for help to treat malaria and diagnose it early, as well to monitor the epidemic situation.
