World leaders warned about risks of nuclear war

A large group of 120 experts, including politicians, military men and diplomats, expressed concerns about the threat of a nuclear war and urged world leaders to take immediate action to reduce risks of escalation of military conflicts, RIA Novosti reports.

The experts wrote the letter, in which they  expressed their concerns, prior to the conference on humanitarian consequences of the use of nuclear weapons. They said that world leaders underestimated the danger of a nuclear war, The Independent said.

Tensions between nuclear powers and their allies in the Euro-Atlantic region, as well as in South and East Asia, creates a potential for a military conflict, the letter said.

The list of signatories includes former British Defence Secretaries Tom King and Desmond Brown, former British Foreign Secretaries Margaret Beckett and David Owen, former Deputy Supreme Commander of NATO Forces in Europe John McCauley, former leader of Liberal Democrats of the UK Menzies Campbell, former deputy chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the USA James Cartwright and others.
