Surgeon in France have carried out the world's first full-face transplant, it emerged yesterday.
The operation was performed on a 35-year-old man named only as Jerome, whose face was deformed by a genetic disorder.
A team headed by Professor Laurent Lantieri grafted the entire face of a dead man on to the patient at the Creteil-Mondor hospital just outside Paris, Scottish Daily Record says.
The hospital said the operation was the 12th face transplant worldwide since the first conducted in France in 2005, on the nose, mouth and chin of a woman disfigured by a dog attack.
Such operations remain quite rare and complex, though they have gained acceptance in recent years, The Associated Press reports.
