Russia plans to spend some US$40 million on bird flu prevention efforts.
Interfax quoted Alexander Pankin, the head of Russia's delegation to the international donors' conference in Beijing, as saying that most of that money would go to the establishment of Russian laboratories that could work to contain the virus in Russia and neighboring countries.
Russia's chief epidemiologist, Gennady Onishchenko, told the Beijing conference that Moscow would put the fight against bird flu on the agenda of this summer's Group of Eight meeting, which it will chair, according to the AP.
