273 forest fires raged in Russia yesterday

Yesterday, 273 forest fires were registered in five of Russia's federal districts, a spokesman for the Federal Forestry Agency, Lev Krylov, told RIA Novosti on Friday.

"According to Air Forest Guards, 91 fires broke out and 54 of them were extinguished yesterday. The fires covered 5,700 hectares of forest on Thursday," he said.

According to him, there are currently 66 forest in the Chita region (Trans-Baikal area), 32 in the Komi Republic (European Russia's north), 28 in Yakutia (East Siberia) and 28 in the Sverdlovsk region (Urals).

"Seventeen major forest fires were extinguished and localized yesterday," Mr. Krylov reported. "All measures are being taken to extinguish the fires,"

Over 3,000 people, 51 aircrafts and 435 hardware units are involved in localizing and extinguishing the fire, he added.
