The ecological situation in Chechnya is improving, Head of the Environment Security of the Russian Armed Forces Lieutenant-General Alevtin Yunak said.
According to him, none of the oil wells are now on fire in the republic, in comparison with 2000 when 40 out of 56 oil wells were on fire. "The environmental situation in Chechnya has a tendency for stabilisation and improvement," Yunak said.
In the course of the anti-terrorist operations in Chechnya, approximately 1,500 illegal mini oil-refineries were detected and eliminated, he noted. However, unfortunately not all illegal oil-refineries have been eliminated since new ones are being constantly built instead of the old ones, the General added.
