Iraq Denies Rumours of Anti-Government Uprising in Basra

The Iraqi Information Ministry has categorically denied that an anti-government uprising is taking place in the besieged town of Basra. According to Information Minister Mohammed al-Sahhaf, this information has been spread by the US-led coalition and is simply another piece of US propaganda. 'We call on people around the world not to believe this mockery of free speech,' said al-Sahhaf. 'The citizens of Basra are fighting against the aggressor and holding the town.'

The Western media has today carried information suggesting that around 3,000 residents of Basra have risen up against Saddam Hussein's militia.
