Why Everyone's Obsessed With Protein — And Whether You Should Be Too

Protein Myths and Facts: Is It Time to Rethink Your Diet?

Once a topic confined to fitness circles, protein has now entered the mainstream. Even those who don’t lift weights are reading food labels for that bold “PROTEIN” sticker. From bars and shakes to high-protein ice cream, the trend has gone far beyond bodybuilding — and for good reason. Protein builds muscle, keeps you full longer, and can even help with weight loss. But is more always better?

Protein plays a critical role in the human body. It supports muscle growth, stabilizes blood sugar, reduces cravings, and keeps metabolism running smoothly. These benefits are well-supported by research, which is why high-protein diets have become popular not just with athletes, but also with those trying to maintain a healthy weight or improve their eating habits.

How Much Protein Is "Enough"?

The answer depends on your goals:

  • Muscle gain: 1.4–2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight
  • Weight loss: 1.2–1.6 g/kg
  • Maintenance: 0.8–1.2 g/kg
  • Sedentary lifestyle (no workouts): About 0.8 g/kg is generally sufficient

Can You Overdo It?

The long-standing myth that too much protein is harmful to the kidneys has been debunked. No serious study has shown damage in healthy individuals consuming even up to 3.3 grams per kilogram of body weight per day. However, excessive intake may still lead to digestive issues, bloating, or increased kidney stress — especially for people with existing kidney conditions.

“Anyone with kidney problems should always consult a doctor before making changes to their diet.”

Not All Protein Is Created Equal

Modern "protein" products like high-protein ice cream or protein bread can be convenient but may lead to an unnoticed surplus of protein in your diet. Eating consciously means not just adding more protein, but also understanding where it’s coming from and how it fits into your overall nutrition plan.

At the end of the day, protein is essential — but like all nutrients, balance and awareness matter more than hype.
