Celebrations of 59th Anniversary of Leningrad's Total Liberation From Blockade in St. Petersburg

On Monday St. Petersburg is celebrating the 59th anniversary of Leningrad's total liberation from the blockade.

The first flowers will be laid to the memorial plaque on house number 14 in Nevsky Prospekt. The inscription on the wall of this house says, "Citizens! This side of the street is especially dangerous during bombardment." The inscription alerted people of Leningrad during the blockade. Nowadays, it reminds us of those tragic and heroic days.

After that, a moment of silence will be observed in the Piskarevskoye and Serafimovskoye memorial cemeteries, by the Monument to Leningrad's heroic defendants in the Victory Square and other burial places of the city's defendants and inhabitants, who died of starvation, to commemorate them. In addition, flowers will be laid to the graves of the blockade victims.

A charity soiree will be organized for veterans and inhabitants of the blockaded city in the St. Petersburg's Academic Philharmonia. Several cinemas will host free shows.

In the evening fires will be lit on the rostral columns on Vasilyevsky Island. The celebrations will end with fireworks in the Peter and Paul Fortress.
