1,200 tame deer to be driven to Evenkia from Yamal

1,200 tame deer will be driven from farms located in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Area, north of the Urals, to Evenkia, Eastern Siberia. During the upcoming winter, the animals and accompanying 7 deer-breeders will have to make a 2,000-kilometer journey across the uninhabited tundra and forest-tundra, reported Valery Bystrov, who heads the farm management of the administration of the Evenki Autonomous Area.

All deer, about 50% of which are does, will be handed over to the freshly opened stock-breeding state unitary enterprise Surindinskoye, which already keeps about 3,000 deer. It will be on the basis of this enterprise that the autonomous area will restore its practically lost tradition of deer-breeding.

At this moment, the person responsible for the deer-driving, Viktor Gauylsky, is busy studying the route of the upcoming journey and the places along the route where helicopters will be able to land in case of dire emergency.
