The fifth and decisive match in this historic battle between France and Russia was won by Russia and more specifically, Mikhail Youzhny, who beat Paul-Henri Mathieu, much to the annoyance of the Palais Omnisports in Paris.
Youzhny won by three sets to two, 3/6,2/6,6/3,7/5 and 6/4, turning the contest in Russia’s favour, winning the Davis Cup for the first time after two defeats in the finals.
