The concrete grain elevator in Ivanic Grad, some 30 kilometer (19 miles) from Zagreb, exploded at 8.30 a.m. Firefighters rushed to the scene, and six people were hospitalized. One of them later died.
Police did not identify the victims, but they apparently worked for the agricultural company that owns the elevator, Agroprerada, according to the AP.
"According to initial information, the explosion probably was caused by a technical error like electricity, gas or grain evaporation," said Davor Tor, a Zagreb police spokesman.
The incident was being investigated, he said, without giving further details.
