New study evaluates alcohol consumption among elderly people

The journal of the American Geriatrics Society uncovers a very interesting study – the intercourse between alcohol and elderly people.

It says that people of 65 and over years old shouldn’t drink more than one glass of wine with dinner or just drink much at a sitting.

The study shows that 1 in 10 older U.S. adults is actually an unhealthy drinker. It means that these people are not only exposed to natural aging problems but add oil to the flame by drinking. Such people have high risk of health and social problems, and the rate of falling is extremely great.

The enumerated facts are not a surprise for you. But what makes it really interesting is the amount of “consumed liquid.” The National Institute on Alcohol and Abuse and Alcoholism has set the permissible limits: 7 drinks in a week and not more than 3 drinks in a day. There is also a consumption scale of “drinks”: 12-ounce beer, 5-ounce glass of wine, 1.5 ounces of hard liquor.

If we compare theory with practice, we’ll see that not a single U.S. resident at 65 and over knows about these limits and that about 2.8 million people can be classified as unhealthy drinkers.

But to your surprise unhealthy drinkers are reported to be healthier and happier. Some studies show that drinkers have low risk of depression in comparison with non-drinkers, and presumably they have better health and higher income if they can allow drinking to excess.

But still these recommendations are worked out from considerations of less harm and injuries one may get if not being careful.
