Portuguese President wants a EU united on Iraq

The Portuguese President considers that only the UNO has the jurisdiction to order a military campaign to be waged against Iraq and that the European Union should speak with one voice against any such action outside the United Nations Organisation.

President Sampaio declared on Monday at the reception dinner for Hungarian President Ferenc Madl, that “Any military action should only be contemplated in the framework of international law. Acting in any other way would be a veritable invitation to anarchy, which others would take advantage of, with dire consequences for international order”.

Stating that Iraq is not the only country to disrespect UN Resolutions (a reference to Israel, for example), Jorge Sampaio referred to the multiple positions until now expressed by certain EU countries, which does nothing for the unity of the block and furthers nothing towards the notion that the EU is a cohesive diplomatic force.
