Police locked down and searched a high school in Southern California after a student told a relative she thought someone had a weapon on campus, but no weapon was found.

The student at Palm Desert High School said she saw an armed former student on the campus, but authorities did not find the former student or a weapon, said Jon Gaffney, an assistant superindentent for the school disctrict.

The alarm came one day after a shooting at an Ohio high school in which a student wounded four people and killed himself.

Palm Desert is near Palm Springs, about 100 miles (160.93 kilometers) east of Los Angeles.
