A Tajik security officer has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in trafficking nearly 200 kilograms (441 pounds) of illegal drugs, including 53 kilograms (117 pounds) of heroin, the Interior Ministry said Monday.

Maj. Tokhirjon Rakhmatov of the State National Security Committee was one of three men arrested Sunday in the Varzob district near the capital Dushanbe after police found the drugs in the car they were riding in, said ministry spokesman Khudonazar Asoyev.

Police suspect that Rakhmatov belonged to a criminal group that supplied drugs from Dushanbe to Tajikistan's northern regions, Asoyev tolf the AP.

The mountainous, impoverished Central Asian nation of 6 million is a major transit route for drugs from Afghanistan.
