Karzai believes Afghan vote lessens need for military action

There is less need for military action in the country since the war on terrorism has been set under control thanks to the achievements of the government, President Hamid Karzai said on Tuesday.

The focus in the war on terrorism should now be on tackling militants in their bases where they get their training, and on stopping their resources and funding, he underlined.

"The nature of the war on terrorism in Afghanistan has changed now," Karzai proceeded.

"Afghanistan now has a constitution, a president, a parliament and a nation fully participating in its destiny, in its reconstruction." The elections for a national assembly and provincial councils went ahead despite threats by Taliban guerrillas to disrupt the vote.

"I don't think there is a big need for military activity in Afghanistan any more. When there's a need for it we'll conduct it," Karzai said. "I believe the use of airpower is something that may not be very effective ... similarly searching Afghan homes without the participation of the Afghan government is something that should stop now," Reuters qouted Karzai as saying.
