Moscow regrets a new complication of relations between the U.S. and Cuba, Russian Foreign Ministry official spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said on Saturday. In this way he commented on the diplomatic incident in connection with a meeting in the US of opponents of the Fidel Castro government.
"We regret that the American-Cuban relations, whose rectification Russia has been consecutively advocating, are aggravating again," the Russian diplomat said. In his words, "it is particularly sad that the tension is provoked through diplomats, to whom the Vienna convention prescribes not to destroy but to consolidate intergovernmental ties." Yakovenko paid heed to the fact that the incident coincided with an enhancement of the US Congress movement for normalisation of relations with Cuba and the visit to Havana by a representative group of American legislators.
