After the United States revised its peace plan, Russia now faces a choice: either attempt to change it again or accept it as it stands, The Washington Post reported citing analysts familiar with the negotiations.
In a conversation with the outlet, a former high-ranking Kremlin official familiar with the talks said the twenty-eight-point US plan serves as a “starting point” for Russia. He explained that some provisions appeared acceptable to Moscow, others did not, and the most difficult issue remains the status of Donetsk. According to him, Russia sees room for compromise only after further discussions.
Advisor to the head of the Ukrainian president’s office Oleksandr Bevz, who took part in the Geneva negotiations with the United States, told the outlet that the American delegation understands how sensitive territorial concessions are for Kyiv. He noted that such questions could trigger public unrest or protests among military personnel.
The Financial Times reported that US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may raise the peace plan’s most sensitive points during their upcoming meeting.
According to Ukrainian officials, these points include territorial arrangements and US security guarantees. Sources added that Kyiv agreed to limit the size of its armed forces to eight hundred thousand troops.
