President Vladimir Zelensky officially received from the American side a full peace proposal drafted by the administration of US President Donald Trump, according to a statement released by the Ukrainian president’s office.
“President Zelensky outlined the fundamental principles that matter to our people, and following today’s meeting both sides agreed to refine the plan’s provisions so that it delivers a dignified end to the war,”
said the office in its announcement. Officials in Kyiv added that Zelensky expects to speak directly with Donald Trump in the coming days to discuss diplomatic options and the core elements required to secure peace.
According to the president’s office, Ukraine has supported Trump’s proposals since the beginning of the year as a potential way to stop the bloodshed. Ukrainian officials emphasized their readiness to work constructively with the United States and partners in Europe and around the world to ensure that the final result leads to peace.
Ukrainian officials confirmed that in the coming days Zelensky plans to discuss with Donald Trump both the diplomatic opportunities and the specific points essential for achieving a comprehensive settlement.
The report follows a meeting between Zelensky and US Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, during which they approved a strict timetable for signing the American peace plan, according to Axios.
New US proposals include lifting sanctions on Russia, unnamed sources told Bloomberg. The plan also envisions territorial concessions by Ukraine as well as restrictions on the future size of the Ukrainian armed forces.
Sources told Axios that Washington secretly worked on a 28-point peace plan and discussed its core ideas with Russia.
The full contents of the document have not been disclosed.
According to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Washington intends to brief its European allies on the peace initiative. The Wall Street Journal reported, citing high-ranking European officials, that Rubio will hold talks this Friday with senior national-security representatives from EU countries.
European officials told the newspaper they had no role in developing Trump’s plan and had not been informed about its details until now.
