Medecins Sans Frontieres humanitarian organisation demands liberation of its representative in Daghestan

The Medecins Sans Frontieres international humanitarian organisation demands "unconditional liberation" of the head of its mission in Daghestan (the North Caucasus), Argan Erkel, who was kidnapped in Makhachkala on August 12, a top-ranking spokesman for this organisation told a press conference in Makhachkala on Wednesday.

According to him, nobody has approached the organisation or the law enforcement bodies with information on the destiny of the kidnapped man and the demands of the criminals. Any information on the contacts between the kidnappers and the organisation, issued by mass media, may threaten Erkel's life or health, the top official said, answering RIA Novosti's question on a possible ransom.

As a matter of fact, the press conference didn't give journalists any new information on Erkel's destiny. The real name of the kidnapped man was specified - Argan Erkel. In addition, they learnt that the organisation's humanitarian activities in Daghestan were suspended, but its offices in Makhachkala and Khasavyurt are still open.
