The Russian Foreign Ministry has received an explanation from the USA concerning the statements made by Condoleezza Rice, the US President's National Security Adviser.
Boris Malakhov, the Russian Foreign Ministry's deputy official spokesman, reported on Friday that Moscow "had paid attention to a scandalous article" spread by some Russian media with reference to Time magazine.
The report asserted that at a closed briefing for a group of congressmen, Condoleezza Rice had expressed regret over the fact that the USA did not invade the Soviet Union in 1948 to prevent the creation of nuclear weapons.
Malakhov said that the Russian Foreign Ministry "did not make any hasty conclusions, but in the spirit of the new Russian-American relations of cooperation requested Washington's explanations." The representatives of the US Administration reported that Condoleezza Rice, the US President's National Security Adviser, never said anything like this, noted the deputy spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry.
