Stratfor calls Russia a peacekeeper

Russia tries to arrange the negotiation process, and its interests are not only in the military sphere, Sim Tack, Stratfor military analyst claimed.

According to him, as Russia established relations with Assad, it tries to establish confidential relations with the regime. Actually, Russia may make use of it to involve Assad into the negotiations with probable representatives of rebels, that may settle the conflict.

According to analysts, Russia sends military equipment and consultants for the support of Bashar al-Assad, and may set an air base there. At the same time, Russia did not deploy ground elements in the region, that could carry out serious operations against the IS fighters to return territories.

Tack added that Russia may face two obstacles in an attempt to arrange the negotiation process. A number of states do not want to deal with Bashar al-Assad, while armed fighters' regiments in Syria are utterly separated. The opposition does not have a single centre, representatives of which could take part in the negotiations with the Syrian President, and thus, the dialogue may not take place.

Unless the fighters unite, and one of the groups represents them all, it won't be possible to start negotiations on the settlement of the Syrian conflict, the analyst concluded.
