Monument to "Kursk" submarine's crew travels to Moscow

A monument to the crew of the nuclear submarine Kursk, which sank in the Barents Sea in 2000, has been cast in the Tatar capital Ufa and is travelling to Moscow on Thursday.

The monument was ordered by the Russian defence ministry and created by the Kazan experimental manufacturing plant of the Volga Forestry Research Institute.

According to plant Director Sergei Marudenko, the unveiling of the four-meter-tall bronze monument, which is going to be installed by the Moscow Museum of Armed Forces, has been scheduled for August 12. The unveiling ceremony was timed to coincide with the anniversary of the death of the Kursk crew.

The monument was authored by the famous sculptor Lev Kerbel and the well-known architect, deputy of Moscow's chief architect Igor Voznesensky. It shows a sailor and a submarine lying at his feet.

The monument goes under the name of "Mourning Sailor" and was meant to suggest that a sailor is greater than the sea.
