Japanese film director was given title of Honorary Citizen of Arsenyev town

Japanese film director Akira Kurosawa was given a title of the Honorary Citizen of Arsenyev town. This was disclosed to a RIA Novosti correspondent by the Arsenyev local Duma.

The creator of such world's known films as "Rashomon" and "Seven Samurai" is very popular in this Far Eastern city. In 1975 he was shooting a film "Dersu Uzala" in the picturesque places of the Ussuriisk Taiga nearby Arsenyev.

The film was a success in the Soviet Union. "Dersu Uzala" won many movie awards, including Oscar in the nomination of the best foreign picture. Starring actors Yury Solomin and Maksim Mundzuk were given the titles of the Honorary Citizens of Arsenyev. The film director was somehow forgotten by the authorities.

For the last two years a group of Kurosawa's local admirers was looking for a "historic justice" by collecting documents and sending appeals to the local Duma.

At the present moment admirers of Kurosawa (he passed away 4 years ago at the age of 87) intend to find his relatives so that they could give them a certificate and a memorable medal. Until now, they are kept in the history museum of the city.

The son of the famous director followed his father's footsteps. Two years ago he visited Arsenyev to make a couple of shots for his documentary film about Akira Kurosawa.
