The flow of Russian tourists to Abkhazia is not lessening, despite threats from the Georgian authorities, the press-service of the North Caucasian regional border department of Russia's Federal Security Service reported.
Over the last weekend the Vesyoloye-Avtodorozhnoye checkpoint, on the Abkhaz sector of the Russian-Georgian border, let through 11,800 citizens and 6,500 transport vehicles, it was noted at the department.
"Throughout this sector of the country's southern frontier, our border guards function normally, without unpleasant incidents or complications," the press-service said.
Last week, Georgia's President Mikhail Saakashvili told journalists that he had given orders to open fire at and sink ships that may try, in detour of Tbilisi, to enter Georgia's Abkhaz territorial waters.
"I want my words to be particularly remembered by Russian tourists. If you want today to travel to Abkhazia from Sochi by launch, please resign yourselves to what happened last Saturday, when Georgian border guards opened fire on a ship," said the Georgian president.
