Karachai-Circassia /a Russian republic in the North Caucasus/ is marking today the 44th anniversary of the Karachai people's return from deportation. Forty-four years ago the first echelon of Karachai people, exiled to Kazakhstan and Central Asia by Stalin's decree of November 2, 1943, arrived in the Karachai capital of Cherkessk. The Day of Revival of the Karachai people was recently established by the decree of President Vladimir Semenov and is now marked on May 3. A gala public session devoted to this date has been held in Cherkessk. Speaking at the session, the republic's president noted that this day is marked by all peoples of the multi-ethnic Karachai-Circassia. The president emphasised: 'We have common land, common fate and we all aim to live in peace, accord and mutual understanding.
