Resumption of Russia’s military and technical cooperation with Iran will, first of all, concern supply of spares for the equipment of Soviet and Russian manufacture which Iranian army is still armed with. Besides, both sides are interested in the “repair and modernization of the Iranian military equipment which could be accomplish at the companies of the Russian military and industrial complex,” say sources close to the Russian military delegation headed by Defence Minister Marshal Igor Sergeyev which is currently on the official visit to Iran. According to the sources, “the matter concerns arms and equipment for Iran’s navy, air forces, army and the Islamic Revolution Guardsmen Corps,” Interfax reports. In particular, according to the same sources, 2 out of 3 Iranian diesel submarines need repair. “Those are 3 877EKM-type (“kilo”-type by NATO classification) submarines were supplied to Tehran by Russia in 1992, 1993, and 1996 respectively,” the sources say.
