Malagasy Republic: epidemic identified

A and B strains of influenza are responsible for the outbreak which has caused 184 deaths in two weeks.

The mysterious virus which has swept through two villages in the Malagasy republic, claiming 184 lives in just two weeks, has been identified as an acute strain of influenza with an extremely high virulence.

Nelson Rasolofonirina, Director of Malagasy Republic’s Pasteur Institute, has explained to journalists that the virus is the A and B strain of influenza, which is attacking the warmer parts of the island. He stated that if people seek medical help after the onset of symptoms, the chances of survival are high, yet many turn to traditional healers whose methods are ineffective.

As usual with influenza outbreaks, most of the victims are among the elderly and young children.
